BSA 2011 “Guide to Safe Scouting” states: All firearm shooting activities must have a certified NRA Range Safety Officer directly supervising all live fire on the range. Additionally, the instruction offered must be done by a currently certified National Camping School Shooting Sports Director certified as an NRA Instructor in that given discipline, or an NRA Instructor certified in that discipline, or an NRA/USA Shooting/CMP-Coach certified in that discipline. These must be two separate individuals.

The Range Safety Officer course is designed to develop NRA Certified Range Safety Officers who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. You do not have to be a NRA Instructor to take this course.
