Camporee Staff Opportunities
“The Legacy Continues” is the Centennial Camporee Theme. We can use your help to lead the legacy as a Staff Member for the Centennial Camporee. It’s easier than ever to be a part of the Staff!
Volunteer staff will be essential to the success of the Centennial Camporee. At this unique Centennial Camporee at which we will celebrate 100 years of the legacy of Scouting in Eastern Oklahoma, we’re inviting registered adult leaders to assist us in any way they can.
To make it easier to be a part of the staff, you can remain embedded in your unit for meals, and also serve on the staff for the fee of $12, which is the participant fee. If you want to purchase a staff hat and staff patch, you can opt to purchase these separately at a low price. The alternative, like prior camporees, is to participate at the full staff fee of $30, which entitles you to full meal service, plus a staff hat, commemorative patch and staff patch. Arrangements are pending for staff who will only work on Saturday and who do not camp over either night.
As discussed below, a number of opportunities exist for you to participate.
Program Staff
Can You Share Your Expertise and Knowledge with Scouts?
Plain and simple, the emphasis of the Centennial Camporee is delivering quality program to the youth of the Indian Nations Council. This is where we need adult leaders to step up and help in this effort.
We’re looking for adult leaders who have expertise and knowledge in various Scouting and camping skills to lead or assist with program activities and expo areas. Some people may refer to this as “Scoutcraft.”
We know our Council is loaded with adults who are very knowledgeable as to different skills. For example, one of our activity areas is called, “You’re going to drink that?” This activity will deal with different means to purify water in the back country when potable water isn’t available. We’re looking for someone who can lead this activity area, pull together the resources in terms of additional volunteers and gear, and be able to pass along your knowledge to the Scouts. Maybe you’ve been to Philmont or Northern Tier and can discuss water purification at those programs. Maybe you’ve participated in a number of back country trips where you must rely on local sources of water. The point is that you have knowledge which can be shared with our youth. Are you a leader who can help us? Attahced is the tentative list of program activities.
There are other opportunities also. If you are a member of an organization, such as the Tulsa Astronomy Club, a historical re-enactment group, or some other outside group, or you have access to someone in such a group, we need assistance to recruit these groups. Plus, we need a coordinator for each group to ensure the group knows everything it needs to know to be a part of the Camporee.
In the event you are interested in leading an activity or expo area, or perhaps showing Scouts what extreme backpacking is about, or wilderness first aid, we’re looking for your help. But, we’re not going to leave you hanging out there for resources. The entire Camporee program has a budget for program supplies and we want our program staff to think about what tools they may need, not at their immediate disposal, so we can acquire them to help instruct the Scouts. It may be something as simple as making a take-a-way instructional sheet, or perhaps you need rope or fly-tying supplies. We’ve all been there as volunteers, relying upon personal resources to deliver program and keep costs down, but we have program money available to help you deliver a quality activity.
In other words, we’re looking for knowledgeable program staff and we’ll help provide tools or resources you don’t have but need to put on a great activity.
In addition to the Scout side of the Centennial Camporee Program, we’re also looking for adult leaders who can assist with the Cub Scout Program. The program has been pre-established and the Council’s Campmasters are taking the lead on this, but we still need volunteers to lend a hand on Saturday.
Please check out the list of program areas we’re working on right now to see what may interest you.
Facilities Staff
We’re also looking for staff to help with the management of the facilities, which broadly includes quartermaster duties, emergency response services, weather monitoring, traffic control, event photography, communications, etc. This area is a little more straightforward when it comes to a mission task as opposed to being involved with the program side, where the mission, in some respects, will be defined by what the volunteers creatively come up with. With any event in which you have over 2,100 attendees, there are many opportunities to lend a hand either in preparing for or implementing a plan of operations during the Camporee. If this interests you, we’d welcome your assistance.
Commissioner Staff
Commissioner staff is the ombudsmen of the Centennial Camporee. Their sole mission objective is to serve the units during their stay at the Centennial Camporee. This includes coordinating and assisting with sub-camp set-up on Friday night, along with assistance throughout the weekend as to any issues, communications or emergencies. In essence, if there is something that needs to be resolved, the Commissioner staff is the “go to” people to get the situation resolved. If you serve as a Commissioner at any level within the Council, you have probably been approached already to serve on staff by John Pojman, the Centennial Camporee Commissioner. NOTE: Many Commissioner Staff will also be serving as Program Staff on Saturday!
